Amazon Reselling: The Basics

The best products to sell on Amazon will have offer a thirty to forty percent return on investment.

Before we dive into the specifics of sourcing products, there are a few things you'll need to know/do first. These include:

1. Getting to grips with the model

Making a profit by reselling products on Amazon means buying low and selling high. When it comes to how to find products to sell on Amazon, the best products will be half the price you intend to sell them for. This will give you a 30-40% ROI. For example, if I invested $100 in a product, I'd make the money back with an additional $30.

2. Opening a professional selling account

Your Amazon account lets you list and ship products to customers through Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). Though the professional plan is costly at $39.99 a month, it makes you eligible for the buy box. This is where 80-90% of Amazon sales come from, so set yourself up for success by starting with the pro plan. Just make sure to factor the price into your initial expenses.

3. Learning about FBA and FBM

FBA selling means you purchase products from a supplier and ship them to Amazon. Then, Amazon ships them to the customer. This means you get to take advantage of their top-notch logistics and excellent customer service. However, there is another model, Fulfilment by Manufacturer (FBM), where you ship products yourself. I'd always recommend FBA because it's much less time-consuming, and you'll take precedence over FBM sellers with the buy box. To learn more about the Amazon buy box, check out my guide here.

4. Downloading the necessary tools and software

The great thing about selling on Amazon is that countless individuals have already perfected the process. They've developed a vast number of software programs and Chrome extensions to make the process much easier. If you're wondering how to find products to sell on Amazon, SellerAmp, Keepa, and DS Amazon Quick View are must-haves!

How to Find Products to Sell on Amazon

Thomas explains why storefront stalking is the easiest way to find products to sell on Amazon

Now that you've set up your Amazon account, it's time to source some potentially profitable products to resell. The easiest method for beginners to find products to sell on Amazon is called ‘storefront stalking.' In this section, I'll walk you through that method step by step.

Step 1: Find a Product – Head over to Amazon and find a product you like the look of. Easy, right?

Step 2: Use SellerAmp to Browse FBA Sellers—In the right-side menu SellerAMP provides, you'll see a list of FBA sellers for your chosen product. Hover over them to see how many reviews they have, and click through on a seller with 20-50 reviews.

Step 3: Look at the Seller's Products – Once on that seller's page, scroll down to see the mix of products they sell. On the left side of the page, you should be able to see the Keepa graphs for those products.

Step 4: Pay Attention to New Sellers—On the Keepa graphs, you'll see an orange line denoting new sellers. The best products will have a flat orange line, so avoid anywhere the line has significantly dropped in recent months.

Step 5: Search for the Product on Google—Load up the Google results for that product. Here, you're trying to find a supplier that sells the product for half the maximum price it's listed at on Amazon. Remember to check whether the product is the same as the one on Amazon by checking the size, weight, and packaging.

If you find a product with at least 30% ROI, you've got a potentially profitable deal! But how can you be sure that a product is going to sell fast and make you money? To get some unique insights into your potential deal, I recommend you sign up for SellerBoard or Seller ToolKit with our free trial links.

Now that you've learned how to find products to sell on Amazon, you simply need to repeat the process to fill your inventory.

How Much Product Should You Buy?

With the general rule that you should buy products at half the price you intend to sell them for, you'll need to spend $5000 to make $10,000. This breaks down to $200 over 25 days. So, that's the daily target you'll need to hit when considering how to find products to sell on Amazon.

Also, pay attention to the speed of your inventory. This is how long it takes from when you click purchase on a supplier's site, to when you ship that product to Amazon. Generally, this will take about 2-3 weeks. Reducing this timeframe will make you money faster. And, finding products that are bestsellers using Keepa's green ‘Sales Rank' line will ensure you get your profit ASAP.

Stumbling Blocks to Look Out For

The biggest problem new sellers face is being gated from selling certain products on Amazon. A key part of how to find products to sell on Amazon is learning out how to get ungated.

Storefront stalking makes how to find products to sell on Amazon easy. But, the sourcing process might not always be plain sailing. Here are two big problems that new sellers come up against that you should be aware of.

1. Unreliable Suppliers

When you're just starting out, every cent counts, so you don't want to get stuck with a supplier with long shipping times or poor customer service. Most FBA sellers have a list of suppliers that always come through for them, but these take time to build up. In the meantime, use the Fast Track FBA Top 100 Suppliers List to ensure you're buying from the best suppliers.

2. Getting Ungated

When you first learn how to find products to sell on Amazon, you might be ineligible to sell certain items. This is because your account is new, so Amazon is waiting until you build up your reputation before they allow you to list specific categories of products. Usually, you can get ungated by submitting an invoice for the product from a legitimate supplier. If you want to know more, check out the Fast Track FBA Ultimate Ungating Guide here.

How to Scale Your Amazon Business

Thomas explains why coupon codes are perfect for maximizing profits because they bring down the buy price of products.

Now that you know the basics of making a profit reselling on Amazon, I'm going to share my tips and tricks for maximizing profits and quickly reaching $10,000.

Maximize Profit when Sourcing Products

Cashback Websites – How to find products to sell on Amazon all comes down to the profit they'll make you, so sites like Rakuten, TopCashback, and BeFrugal are a huge help. They'll give you back money when you buy products from eligible sites.

Coupon Codes—Coupon codes can help you maximise profits by lowering the buy prices of certain items. I use the Capital One Shopping Chrome extension to find coupon and voucher codes across the web

Gift Cards—Discounted gift cards can shave 5-10% off a buy price. Sites I'd recommend for this trick are CardCookie, CardCash, and Gift Card Wiki. Make sure you're buying legitimate gift cards!

Credit Cards – If you can't use gift cards, you should definitely use credit cards instead. These give you cashback, points, other rewards, and purchase protection. Fast Track FBA uses American Express, but many sellers use the Chase Sapphire rewards scheme.

Tax-Free Prep Center—Shipping products to your home and then shipping them to Amazon costs money. This process costs even more if you live in a high-tax state. By shipping products directly to a prep center, which will send them to Amazon for you, you'll save money on tax even after paying their fees.

Join a Community – As a beginner, when you're learning how to find products to sell on Amazon, you'll probably come up against some issues. The best thing about online arbitrage is there's a high chance another seller has already figured out a solution. So, joining a community like the Fast Track FBA Facebook group will give you a place to learn from the best.
